William Norman Arnold at Backwoods Gallery
Joe Savell’s Backwoods Gallery is hosting a unique collection of paintings by William Norman Arnold (1907-2006). The Missouri-born, Arkansas-raised painter came to art the long way, after a brief stint playing minor-league baseball and longer career in the oil and gas industry, which is what brought him to Monroe, and eventually Baton Rouge. A local anecdote says that Arnold took up painting when he saw some tubes of paint and brushes on a drug store counter in Monroe, so he bought them and began painting. Eventually, he would attend the John McCrady School of Art in New Orleans, and would visit with and draw inspiration from New Orleans artists like Clarence Millet and Knute Heldner. Artist and Backwoods Gallery Curator/Owner Joe Savell met Arnold and first saw his artwork when Savell was a mail carrier in the 1990s. Seventeen of Arnold’s paintings hanging in the Backwoods show will be available for purchase. For more information, call Savell at (225) 721-1736.
