A Taste of the Deep South
Celebrate the Baton Rouge blues with one of our city’s biggest musical icons for the annual Henry Turner, Jr. Day, which also brings the sixth-annual A Taste of the Deep South Festival.
Headlining with his band Flavor and the Listening Room Allstars, Henry Turner, Jr. joins SmokeHouse Porter and Miss Mamie, along with Listening Room All-Stars Kelton ‘Npsire Harper and the Inspiration Band, Owen Scott, Pastor Leon Hitchens, comedian Eddie “Cool” Deemer, the My Better Half Band, and Katrina and Xavie Shorts. Additional acts include Mz. Pat—The Lady of Soul, the Phoenix Rouge and Shakshuka Belly Dance Troupes, solo dancer Nan Catherine, Kasey Ball Presents Soul Loops, and the rock band Code Black. Touring acts include the bluegrass act Captain Ledge Band from Oklahoma, folk and Americana acts Wild Rabbit Salad from Texas, and J.C. Tokes from North Carolina; plus Special Olympian and Motivational Rapper Priceless Lion from Nebraska, Mona Lisa and Lady J with their Tina Turner and Diana Ross tributes from California, and Saturday’s closing act features R&B singer Akeylah Simone from Virginia.
In addition to the tunes, the festival promises a Vendors’ Village, an international food court offering Southern and ethnic foods, and more. Free and family friendly, from noon–8 pm at Riverfront Plaza. VIP passes are $25 and include two meal and drink tickets, commemorative Henry Turner Jr. CD, and access to exclusive VIP areas. Admission includes a buffet and no-host bar, as well as performances by Henry Turner Jr. & Flavor, some of the Listening Room All Stars, plus members of the Phoenix Rouge and Shakshuka Belly Dance troupes. $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
