Where else can you find 6 historic plantation homes open to the public within 20 minutes of each other? Each plantation is very different with a highlight of it's own. Audubon State Historic Site, Oakley House is West Indies style and was home to JJ Audubon during his stay in West Feliciana Parish. Rosedown Plantation has extensive gardens with the beautiful oak alley. Butler Greenwood has by the most beautiful parlor, owned by the original family and tours given by the local historian and author of numerous books. Cottage Plantation is the oldest, Z. Taylor once stayed and more intact outbuildings than others. Greenwood is known for its Greek revival architecture, with it's large white columns. And of course, The Myrtles for it's ghost stories.
Addition to the plantations, other historic places to visit are the historic district of St. Francisville, Afton Villa Gardens and a nearby Civil War battlefield, Port Hudson. Within the historic district there are several historic churches; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Grace Episcopal Church & Cemetery and First United Methodist.
The historic district is speckled with historic private homes, offices and shops. The courthouse with its recently restored towered clock is located across from Grace Church. We strongly recommend strolling the historic district (or referred to as Main St.) by the only two streets.
